GTA 6 File Size: 212 GB
GTA 6 is reported to need up to 212 GB of storage โ one of the biggest console installs ever. Here is what that number actually means, how much room each console really has, and how to be ready before preload opens on 10 November 2026.

What "up to 212 GB" means
The reported install size for Grand Theft Auto VI is up to 212 GB on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. "Up to" matters: the final figure can vary slightly by platform, region and language packs, and launch updates can push the real footprint higher. Plan around 212 GB as the minimum to clear, and treat anything above it as headroom you will be glad you kept.
Why so big? Modern open-world games bundle high-resolution textures, dense audio in many languages, and a large detailed map โ and GTA 6 is expected to be Rockstar's largest world to date. Whatever the final breakdown, the practical takeaway is the same: on a launch-model console, this one game can claim roughly a third of your usable storage.
How much room do you actually have?
Console storage marketing numbers are not what you can use. System software takes a cut of every drive, so usable space is always lower than the box says. Approximate usable storage:
The home page has a storage checker and download-time estimator โ enter your free space and connection speed and it tells you whether you fit and how long the 212 GB download will take (at 200 Mbps, about 2 hours 21 minutes; at 50 Mbps, closer to 9ยฝ hours, which is exactly why preloading early matters).
Making room
You have three levers, cheapest first. Delete or archive games you have finished โ both consoles can re-download purchases any time. Move games to a USB external drive โ PS5 and Xbox titles cannot be played from a regular USB drive, but they can be stored there and copied back far faster than re-downloading. Add fast storage โ a compatible internal NVMe SSD for PS5, or the official expansion card for Xbox, is the permanent fix if your library keeps growing.
Storage worth considering

NVMe SSD with heatsink
The permanent PS5 fix: a PCIe Gen4 NVMe drive that meets Sony's speed requirements, with a heatsink fitted, installs in the expansion slot and plays PS5 games directly.

The plug-and-play Xbox option: the official expansion card matches the internal drive's speed, so Series X|S games can be played straight from it.

The budget option: park finished PS5/Xbox games on a big USB drive instead of deleting them, and copy them back in minutes when you want them again.

212 GB in context
For scale: 212 GB is more than the entire usable storage of a base-model older console, roughly 425,000 high-resolution photos, or about 45 hours of 4K video. Among games, installs in the 50โ150 GB range are common for big releases โ GTA 6's reported footprint sits above that band, which is why storage, not the download itself, is the main launch-week headache. The good news: preload opens nine days early, on Tue 10 Nov 2026, so a slow connection or a big clear-out is a planning problem, not a launch-night disaster โ if you start now.
