GTA 6 Preload Guide
Everything you need to have Grand Theft Auto VI downloaded, installed and ready before launch: the exact preload dates for PS5 and Xbox, step-by-step instructions for both consoles, how much storage to clear, and fixes for the problems people actually hit.
When preload opens
Digital preload opens on Tuesday 10 November 2026 — nine days before launch — but the exact moment depends on your platform. GTA 6 launches on Thursday 19 November 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only.
Clear 212 GB first
GTA 6 is reported at up to 212 GB installed. Preload can fail or stall if the console runs out of room mid-download, so free up space before 10 November — and keep a buffer on top of the 212 GB for the download's working space and any day-one update.
- Check free space now PS5: Settings → Storage. Xbox: My games & apps → Manage. Aim for at least 212 GB free, ideally 230 GB+ to be safe.
- Archive or delete finished games Backlog titles you have completed are the fastest win. Both consoles let you move PS5/Xbox games to an external USB drive to make room and move them back later.
- Use a wired connection if you can 212 GB over Wi-Fi is slow and more likely to pause. An Ethernet cable, or moving the console closer to the router, makes a real difference at this size.
- Turn on rest-mode / standby downloads So the download continues overnight and while the console is idle — see the step-by-step settings below.
Will your preload finish in time?
You have nine days between preload opening and the unlock — but up to 212 GB is a lot of road. Tell us your platform and line speed and this works out exactly when your download lands, and how much slack you have before the unlock at midnight ET, Thu 19 Nov 2026. It runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is sent or stored.

Unsure of your speed? Run any speed test on the same connection your console uses — and test over Wi-Fi if that's how the console connects, not from a wired PC.
Your finish line
For the full up to 212 GB, starting the moment preload opens on your platform. Server congestion on 10 Nov can stretch these numbers — the verdict accounts for that.
Preload on PS5
PlayStation 5 preload instructions
For digital pre-orders from the PlayStation Store.
- Pre-order first. Preloading requires a digital pre-order (Standard $79.99 or Ultimate $99.99 in the US). No pre-order, no preload.
- Turn on automatic downloads. Go to Settings → Saved Data and Game/App Settings → Automatic Updates, and enable Auto-Download / Auto-Install for pre-ordered content.
- Allow rest-mode downloads. Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode → enable "Stay Connected to the Internet" and "Enable Turning On PS5 from Network".
- From Tue 10 Nov, midnight your local time, the game should begin downloading automatically. To start it manually, find GTA 6 in your Game Library, select it, and choose Download.
- Check it finished. The tile should show the full install with a countdown timer to launch. Leave the console in rest mode overnight if the download is still running.
Preload on Xbox
Xbox Series X|S preload instructions
For digital pre-orders from the Microsoft Store.
- Pre-order first. A digital pre-order (Standard $79.99 or Ultimate $99.99 in the US) is required to preload.
- From 00:00 GMT on Tue 10 Nov (Monday evening in North America), open My games & apps → Full library, find GTA 6, and select Install — or find it in the Store and choose Pre-install.
- Use the Xbox mobile app if the console is off. You can queue the install remotely from the app once preload is live, as long as the console is set to Instant-on / Sleep power mode.
- Keep the console in Sleep mode (Settings → General → Power options) so downloads continue while it is "off".
- Verify before launch day. The game tile in My games & apps should show the full ~212 GB installed ahead of the 19 Nov unlock.
When preload goes wrong
Preload hasn't started yet
Double-check the start time for your platform: PS5 is midnight local time on 10 Nov, Xbox is 00:00 GMT on 10 Nov for everyone. If your slot has passed, restart the console, confirm the pre-order is in your library, and trigger the download manually from the game tile rather than waiting for the automatic start.
Download keeps pausing or failing
The usual cause is storage: if free space drops below what the download needs, it stalls. Free up more than 212 GB, pause other downloads and updates, and switch to a wired connection. On PS5, rebuilding the database (Safe Mode) clears a surprising number of stuck-download issues.
"Not enough space" even though I deleted games
Check for space held by other users' profiles, game recordings and screenshots, and "Other" storage. On Xbox Series S especially, 212 GB is more than half the usable drive — an expansion card or external drive for older titles may be unavoidable. It's downloaded — why can't I play?
Because preload is not early access. The game unlocks at midnight ET on Thu 19 Nov 2026 in the US for everyone, on both editions. Anyone selling "early access keys" before then is running a scam — there are none.
Will there be a day-one patch?
Rockstar has not confirmed patch details. Keep automatic updates on during launch week so any launch update downloads as soon as it is published, and leave storage headroom beyond the 212 GB.

Can I preload without pre-ordering?
No. On both PlayStation and Xbox, preloading is tied to a digital pre-order. The code-in-box edition (from 12 Nov) also works: redeem the code and download straight away.
Does the Ultimate Edition preload earlier?
No. Both editions preload at the same time and unlock at the same time — neither includes early access. Compare them in the editions guide.
Can I preload on PC?
